What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is about classic search engines like Google and Bing, clean technical setup, good content, backlinks, high rankings. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimises for answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, which don't show ten links but give one single answer. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the newest discipline: it optimises for generative AI summaries like Google AI Overviews or Bing Copilot.

All three interlock, anyone invisible in classic search is rarely quoted in AI answers either. We don't treat them as three separate projects, but as one discipline with three surfaces.

Do I still need classic SEO?

Yes, more than ever, just differently. SEO is the foundation: at their core, all three surfaces use similar signals (clean technical setup, solid content, backlink authority, structured data). If you don't rank on Google, ChatGPT will rarely quote you either, because the models train on web content and index the open web.
